jezusek Christ of Otero – Spain Height 30 meters (98.5 feet)

You can find the Cristo del Otero on the outskirts of the Spanish city of Palencia in Castile and Leon. It was built in 1931 in a style reminiscent of the Art Deco movement.   It was the project of the sculptor Victorio Macho who is buried at its feet.It is probably one of the least known of these Jesus monuments.  Its slender shape and sheer verticality are believed to stem from Macho’s desire that the statue be viewed from directly below – and perhaps in contrast to the almost flat cereal fields of Castilla which surround the statue.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe Basque Country.

The climb down the hill, across the bridge and up to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a small adventure that will handsomely reward you with truly impressive views. The ocean can be particular rough in this area and the waves really crash against the rocks of the island, adding to its awe-inspiring beauty. If you think it looks cool in the photos, just wait till you experience it in person. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, whose name means “castle rock” in Basque (“gaztelu” = castle + “aitz” = rock), is a definite “must” if you are visiting the Basque Country.
